The Great Wall, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, was built to protect China against invaders. Invaders such as the Mongols, Huns, and Manchurians dwelled in the north and would often attack China. The wall was then built to protect China, although it did little to protect it because defenders on the wall could be bribed. There were others uses for the wall besides being a barrier for defense. The wall was often used as a trade route since it was basically an elevated road. Messengers could travel along the wall to deliver messages. The great wall was also used to watch over farmers and made sure they did their job. These are the main reasons for why the Great Wall was built.
The great wall is a massive structure that stretches approximately 5500 miles long. Since the Great Wall is so long, it couldn’t have been built all at once. Instead, Qin Shi Huang ordered different walls to be joined together to form one gigantic wall. During the construction of new parts of the Great Wall, workers used local materials to build it. It is thought that soldiers, prisoners, and common people helped build the wall. Some areas of the wall are built from stone; others are from dirt and even wood. So many perished building the wall and the dead people’s bodies were added to the wall. Although parts of the Great Wall are destroyed, it tended to be more than 7 meters high and over 5 meters wide, thus allowing horses to ride on the wall. These are the main points on the construction of the Great Wall
The Great Wall stretches through five provinces and five autonomous regions. It is located from the Bohai Bay to in the east to the Jiayu pass in the west. The great wall is not one straight wall; it is like a tree trunk with little branches coming out of the main trunk. It is the longest man-made structure in the world.
The Great Wall is one of China’s most important tourist attractions with about 10 million tourists every year. Tourist flock from all over the world to come walk on the gigantic structure. The Great Wall provides so much money for the Chinese government and thus it is important for China. It is also an important cultural structure and without funding, it may disappear forever. With tourism though, the Great Wall can continue to exist.
